It's Raining Men

Tonight we watched the Season 8 finale of American Idol. It came down to the most versatile performer in AI history and the hottest guy ever on AI. Whatever happens, there will be no loosers. We all won by having these two guys as the finalists.

Each boy sang 3 songs:
Round 1 - Performer's Choice - they sang a song that they had previously performed.
Adam - recreated the haunting and magical "Mad World".
Kris - re-wowed us with "Ain't No Sunshine".
Both were smart and chose their best songs of the year. I thought Round 1 was a tie.

Round 2 - Producer Simon Fuller's Choice.
First Simon Fuller is not the same Simon as the judge Simon Cowell. They are both from England, however. Remember all males in Britain are either named Nigel or Simon.
"Change is Gonna Come" was selected for Adam. He showed that he can also do R & B. Great performance and a good song selection.
"What's Goin On?" was the song chosen for Kris. Unfortunately that was my question after he was done. It was not enough for a special night.
Round 2 definitely went to Adam.

Round 3 - New Judge Kara DiGuardi's song written just for tonight.
The song "No Boundaries" was simply weird. An embarrassment to Kara and to both Adam and Kris. I will not even judge this round.

This finale reminds me of Season 2, where it came down to Reuben and Clay Aiken. It was extremely close. Will the 8th American Idol be the first gay to win the title? or will we have the first Idol ever shorter than me? My choice to win is Adam. But remember in Season 2 I chose Clay. As a warning, FOX is going to milk the Results show for all it's worth. The show will last over 2 hours. So adjust your DVR or your sleeping schedule, if you plan on watching. I never watch the Results show. Instead I have a good friend in California that simply texts me the results.

Rock This House

It's Rock week on American Idol. What does that mean? Rock n Roll is about 50 years old. Do they really mean any song in the past 50 years? This week's mentor was Slash. I'd love to be able to listen to the phone call to Allison's parents telling them that her mentor is Slash!

Hopefully Slash means that it will be a good week and there will be some real rock n roll tonight.
Slash was born in England. He has an African American mother and a British father. He's best known as the lead guitartist for Guns and Roses. After a very public fight with Axel Rose, he started Slash's Snakepit. They put out a couple albums. Currently he is in a band called Velvet Revolver. For my readers under 30, you probably know him best as a playable character in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. By the way, Guitar Hero is my new favorite game. With the Wii, even I get to be a Rock Star. Slash was involved in so many great rock n roll songs, they should have made it simply Slash Week on IDOL.

We know all the finalist are really good at ballads, but how will they handle Rock? Before the contest started, I'd say the edge had to go to Adam and Allison. They are both really good rockers. So how did they do tonight?

1. Adam - Whole Lot of Love - Two historical firsts tonight. The first time a Led Zeppelin song has ever been on American IDOL! And you wonder why I'm not a big fan of the show. And the first time I've ever agreed with Paula. Whole Lot of Perfection tonight.

2. Allison - Cry Baby - We knew she would do Janice Joplin and she nailed it. The judges weren't very impressed and they think she will be crying tomorrow. I don't think so. After tonights performance, her and Adam will be the final two.

3. Danny - Dream On - it was OK until the end. OMG, what was that at the end? He shows that he's got big ones, even to try this on national TV. He may be dreamin on at home next week.

4. Kris - Come Together - I knew this was going to be a tough week for Kris, but I couldn't even imagine that it would be this bad. But Kris is still very hot, and the title of his song, says it all for me. But he may be coming at home tomorrow.

Because they now have 4 judges, the producers don't know what to do about the time difference. In previous years the 4 finalist used to do 2 songs each. This year they did duets. It really didn't prove anything except that Adam and Allison are better than Danny and Kris. To make it interesting they should have paired Adam and Kris and Allison and Danny. I think this was AI's way of influencing the vote.

You all know that I never ever watch the Wednesday Results show. Paula Abdul will be singing her new song, "I'm Just Here For The Music". And I thought it was because she needed the money or easy access to drugs. Anyway if you are a Paula fan, you might want to watch tomorrow.

Next week I'll be flying my mom to Minnesota for a week. There will be no blog. I'm not even sure they have internet. It's not in Minneapolis. You fly into the cities (that's what northern Minnesotans call Minneapolis/St. Paul), you rent a car and drive north almost 200 miles to Duluth and turn left. Then you go almost another hundred miles west. It's a very small town. Without my guidance, you will have to decide on your own who should be in the final two. Come on! you can think for yourselves for one week. I of course will be back in time to tell you who should actually win American Idol 2009.

Gotta go now, Happy Hour!! To quote one of Slash's great works:
"It's Five O'Clock Somewhere".
